What is Venous Ablation?

Venous ablation is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat chronic venous insufficiency and varicose veins. It works by sealing off malfunctioning veins, redirecting blood flow to healthier veins, and relieving symptoms like swelling, pain, and skin changes.

When is Venous Ablation Recommended?

Venous ablation is recommended when patients experience symptoms or complications due to venous insufficiency, including:

  • Pain, swelling, or aching in the legs
  • Varicose veins causing discomfort or cosmetic concerns
  • Skin discoloration or ulceration due to poor circulation
  • Leg heaviness or fatigue
  • Failure of conservative treatments like compression therapy

How is Venous Ablation Performed?

The procedure is performed in an outpatient setting under local anesthesia:

  • A small incision is made in the leg to insert a catheter into the diseased vein.
  • Thermal energy (radiofrequency or laser) or chemical agents are used to close the vein.
  • The catheter is removed, and the treated vein collapses and is reabsorbed by the body over time.
  • Compression stockings may be applied to aid healing.

Recovery after Venous Ablation

Most patients can resume normal activities within a day:

  • Mild bruising and discomfort may occur but usually resolve quickly.
  • Walking is encouraged to promote circulation.
  • Compression stockings should be worn for a few weeks to support vein healing.
  • Follow-up appointments may be necessary to monitor progress.

Risks of Venous Ablation

Although safe, venous ablation may have minor risks, including:

  • Mild pain or bruising at the treatment site
  • Temporary skin discoloration
  • Rare risk of blood clots or nerve damage
  • Allergic reactions to anesthesia or sclerosing agents

Benefits of Venous Ablation

Venous ablation offers several advantages for patients with venous insufficiency:

  • Minimally invasive with no major incisions
  • Quick recovery and minimal downtime
  • Effective relief from pain and swelling
  • Improves cosmetic appearance of varicose veins
  • Long-term results with minimal recurrence

This procedure provides a safe and effective solution for venous disorders, helping patients regain comfort and mobility.
